Career Options and Considerations in Silicon Valley’s High Tech Industry

Starting in the lower peninsula about 40 years ago, Silicon Valley’s High Tech Industry has grown to the point that it affects many aspects of life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Press reports of high salaries and generous stock option payouts have made many people wonder if they should seek employment in this industry. If you are considering ways to enter this industry, or you are already in this industry and you are contemplating a change, then you might wish to listen to this presentation by John van Heteren, a veteran of the High Tech Industry.

This presentation will cover topics such as:

  • If Bay Area salaries are so high, then why are new Tech positions still opening here? What is the future outlook for employment here?

  • I want to help people and I don’t want to be a slave for some mega-corporation. But I also want to be able to afford housing – what opportunities are there for me?

  • I have some engineering experience, but I do not know the latest-greatest technologies, what job opportunities are open to me?

  • I took some engineering classes in college, but they weren’t fun – what opportunities are there for me?

  • What kinds of companies are better to work for? Hardware? Software? Semi-Conductor? Medical Devices? Other?

  • I have a sort-of OK job in a Tech company now, and I read about fantastic-sounding jobs at other companies. Should I be looking elsewhere?

John will explain his lessons learned in over 30 years of Silicon Valley High Tech employment at various companies, of which 20 years have been in various forms of management positions. He will also share his insights on the here and now of Silicon Valley.

Meet Our Featured Mentor: John van Heteren

In over 30 years of employment in Silicon Valley High Tech firms, John van Heteren has worked for a startup, for several mid-sized tech firms, and for some large tech firms. John has held roles ranging from scientist, design engineer, system engineer, project manager, product manager, functional manager, and Engineering Director. He has led small teams, and has led teams of many tens of engineers. John has been in companies that were acquired, and has been on teams arranging the acquisition of other companies. He has led Physicists, and has led Mech, Elec, FW, SW and AI Engineers. John has worked in Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, Wireless Telemetry, and Security Inspection. All these experiences have given him a perspective on the priorities guiding decision-making at High Tech companies, which in turn affect the career decisions that many people need to make.

Online Event Information

As we receive registrations to this event, we will collect email addresses of attendees. As the event date gets closer, we will be sending out the Zoom link for the event via email. Along with this information, we will send out a guide on how to gain the most out of the session.

We are aiming to give attendees the ability to chat with each other just like you would in an onsite networking event. We plan to keep the first 20 minutes of the event to online moderated networking.

To make the networking event even more interesting, we are imagining now that the event is scheduled online, we could have the presence of attendees from many parts of the world. This should add some fun and interesting aspects of interactions to all of us participating in the event.

Regarding Coronavirus COVID-19

The Mentoring Club is monitoring guidance about the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic on a daily basis.

With the declarations of lockdown in many parts of the world including the Bay Area/Silicon Valley where we are based out of and originally planned on conducting this event, we are moving this onsite event to completely online.

We support the lockdown response to the crisis geared towards flattening the Coronavirus COVID-19 curve (slowing the spread of the virus) and helping our healthcare workers and systems manage their services and prevent them from experiencing enormous stress and potential collapse.

We encourage everyone to exercise the following personal protective protocol to ensure that we limit our exposure and risk to the virus: practice social distancing, eat healthy foods and supplements, get restorative sleep, and find creative ways to exercise indoors and follow your specific location’s official directives for exercising outdoors. We hope everyone stays calm and informed. Avoid panic, and most of all, enjoy the journey of learning despite the challenges of COVD-19.
